Southampton has been ranked as the second-friendliest place for e-bike riders in the whole of the UK.

According to a new study by the e-bike company, Mycle, Southampton was only behind Portsmouth in that regard.

Additionally, it was ahead of places such as Bournemouth, Brighton and Bristol.

The analysis from Mycle looked at a range of factors, such as the number of motorways and dual carriageways, traffic levels, and RTC casualties involving bikes to come to their conclusion.

Why is Southampton considered to be good for e-bikes?

Southampton was considered the second-best place for e-bikes in the UK due to a "huge 656 cycle routes, very little dual carriageways or motorways and much lower traffic levels than Portsmouth."

Mycle added: "The sunny coastal city sees 1,699 hours of sun throughout the year and just 159 days of rain, making for safer roads and a more enjoyable commute."

Michael Wooldridge, co-founder of Mycle, said: “It’s no surprise that these southern coastal cities have ranked so highly for e-bike commuting, as we see the most interest in this region from the e-bike community.

"Whilst there’s still a way to go to ensure that commuting by e-bike is almost ‘the new norm’, it’s great to hear councils are pushing for relevant road safety and biking schemes to welcome e-bikes onto roads.

"E-bikes, such as the cargo bike, aren’t just for seasoned cyclists, but for the everyday commuter looking to carry out their food shop, school run, or work commute.”
